Goulter's Mill Farm, Burton

The ownership of the mill from the late 1700s to about 1820 is recorded in documents held by Wiltshire Archives. The mill was occupied by George Roach (d 1763) and the lease was left in his will to his niece, Elizabeth Goulter (1749-1822) and her husband John Goulter (1748-1835). It was leased from Lord Chedworth. The Goulter’s children were Mary Maria (b 1776) and John (b 1782). In 1820 John Goulter sub-let the property for 14 years to William Gay.
John and Elizabeth did not live at the property; they were at Petty France running the Beaufort Arms inn. It is not known what happened to the remainder of the lease after John Goulter’s death in 1835, but it may have then transferred to his daughter or another member of the family.
